I was one of those digital download holdouts for many a year for one reason: No liner notes. I used to love bringing my musical haul home and poring over the liner notes. (My most treasured tiny booklets were of the Vaughn Oliver 4AD vintage.) But then I got lazy, moved way too much, and wanted my music RIGHT NOW, so I abandoned CD shopping and sold everything except the very rarest physical specimens to Amoeba. But today I opened up the iTunes digital booklet for Richard Hawley’s “Truelove’s Gutter” and found myself whisked back to the halcyon days of overwrought typography and oversaturated photography.
